As renewable energy continues to come into the spotlight because of the challenges facing South Africa’s ageing traditional energy grids, more and more people are becoming interested in its technologies. Grid-tied solar systems have become a buzzword many people hear, but many aren’t that familiar with yet.
Put simply, a grid-tied solar system only consists of two key components. The first component is the actual solar panels, and the next component is a dedicated grid tied inverter. All of the electricity generated by your solar panels are fed through a mains synchronised inverter, which flows straight to the distribution board. This, in turn, offsets the power your property usually consumes from Eskom.
This only happens when the sun shines, however. Should the panels produce more power than what’s being consumed, the surplus power flows back into the network, most metering is four quadrant allowing the electricity supplier to measure the electricity flow in either direction. Since there aren’t any batteries used, you can’t use any stored independent energy later on.
